Malhar Utshab begins at Chhayanaut

The tones of raga-based music reflect various moods with the changes of seasons. The six seasons of Bangladesh help our joys and sorrows mingle with music. Season-based ragas are very rare in classical music. Monsoon marks an end to the scorching heat. To articulate those feelings, artistes of Bangladesh Uchchanga Sangeet Shilpi Parishad (BUSSP) are holding a two-day “Malhar Utshab” (festival) at the main auditorium of Chhayanaut Shangskriti Bhaban in Dhaka on July 13 and 14.
Both classical vocal and instrumental music will be performed at the festival. Directed by Dr. Rezwan Ali, artistes of BUSSP will set off the opening day's (July 13) event with a choral performance based on Raga Megh Malhar. Dr. Rezwan Ali, Dr. Fakir Shahidul Islam, Chandana Devi Hajong and Dr. Harun-ar-Rashid will present classical vocal music based on Ragas -- Jayanta Malhar, Gaur Malhar, Mia Ki Malhar and Kajri -- respectively on the opening day. Alauddin Mian will play Raga Megh on violin while Kamal Jahir Shamim will play Raga Desh Malhar on sarod.
On the second day of the festival, Dr. Mintu Krishna Paul, Leo J. Baroi, Chowdhury Mostak Hossain, Professor Shamima Parveen and Asit Dey will perform vocal classical music. Ebadul Haque Saikat will play Raga Jai Jayanti on sitar.
