Tigers out
South Africa made it to a tournament final for the first time in nine years when they beat Zimbabwe by six wickets in the last round-robin match of the Twenty20 triangular yesterday.
The last time South Africa played in a final of a tournament involving more than two teams was in 2003 at Lord's.
At the Harare Sports Club, the Proteas' win came in 17.4 overs, resulting in Bangladesh's elimination due to an inferior net run-rate after all teams finished on eight points each.
If South Africa had lost or chased down the 125-run target in 15 overs (or less), the Tigers would have been one of the teams in the final, to be played today at the same venue. Instead they took their time in pursuit of the modest 124-6 made by Zimbabwe.
Richard Levi provided some hope when the big-hitting opener hammered four boundaries and four sixes in his 30-ball 54 but his run-out in the eleventh over all but sealed Bangladesh's fate. Despite needing a gettable 37 off 28 balls to win inside 15 overs, Justin Ontong and newbie Farhan Behardien weren't interested in the big hits as they crept towards the target, adding 34 off 39 balls for the fourth wicket.
Ontong was dismissed for 24, making way for Albie Morkel to hammer a six to win the game in the 18th over.
Earlier, Zimbabwe opener Hamilton Masakadza again provided the brisk start but when he fell to man-of-the-match Wayne Parnell for 36 off 30 balls (four boundaries and a six), it led to a mini-collapse. The left-arm seamer removed Malcolm Waller and Elton Chigumbura in quick succession as the hosts slipped to 60 for five in the eleventh over.
Stuart Matsikenyeri and Graeme Cremer added 32 for the sixth wicket before the latter finished the Zimbabwe innings well, hitting four boundaries in his 27-ball 36.
