Sonali Bank suspends two officials for malpractice
Sonali Bank suspended two of its staff members following detection of loan irregularities of up to Tk 2,638 crore.
The two suspended officials are deputy general manager AKM Azizur Rahman and assistant general manager Saiful Hasan of the bank's Ruposhi Bangla branch.
They have been found culpable of extending loans of around Tk 2,638 crore against dubious documents from three not too creditworthy companies, including Hallmark Group, by an inspection team of Bangladesh Bank (BB).
The central bank on May 21 gave Sonali Bank a 17-point directive, along with the inspection report, on the measures to take against the guilty parties.
In response, Sonali Bank on May 24 held a special board meeting and issued directives to attach the two accused officials to the bank's head office.
BB, however, was not satisfied with the step and via a letter on May 31 recommended suspension of the two officials.
