Sahara became sponsors of the Bangladesh cricket team for the next four years after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) approved their sponsorship rights yesterday.
The board, in an emergency meeting approved awarding the sponsorship rights of the national team, clothing and attire, the BCB National Cricket Academy, title sponsorship and in-stadia sponsorship for 2012 and 2013, Hoover Cover branding, pavilion branding, electronic display board and manual score board to Aamby Valley (Mauritius) Ltd -- an affiliate of Sahara India Pariwar.
The board also decided to award Axiom Technologies the title sponsorship and in-stadia sponsorship for 2014 and 2015 and beverage and ticketing rights from 2012 to 2015 as they were the highest bidder.
"These two companies got the rights as the highest bidders. The total sponsorship amounts is approximately 113 crore taka (14 million dollars approximately) for a four-year period," said BCB's media committee chairman Jalal Yunus after the meeting.
Sahara made an offer of approximately 9.4 million dollars to become the sponsors of the Bangladesh cricket team, this was the highest bid by the local subsidiary firm of the Indian conglomerate Sahara India. Grameenphone, the previous long-term sponsors, offered approximately 3.2 million dollars while another telecom company Robi put forward roughly 4 million dollars.
It has also decided in the meeting that each member of the 1997 ICC Trophy winning Bangladesh squad will receive taka five (05) lakhs in recognition of their contribution to Bangladesh cricket.
"It is just recognition of their contribution to the country's cricket. We are also considering taking similar measures for the national team members who played against the visiting MCC team in 1977-78," informed Yunus.
