5 arrested with firearms
Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested five alleged hitmen, possessing three firearms and 22 bullets, from the capital's Mirpur and Mohammadpur yesterday for killing a man in Shah Ali area on May 14.
The arrestees are Md Raju, 34, and Md Shanu, 27, of Barguna, Ruhul Amin Ledu, 35, and his brother Md Khalil, 23, and Md Azad, 26, of Mymensingh.
DB (North) Additional Deputy Commissioner Mashiur Rahman said the arrestees admitted during preliminary interrogation that they killed Bashir Uddin Bashu, 45, of Nababer Bagh Uttar Para area for Tk 5 lakh.
He said Bashir had a dispute over a piece of land with four locals -- Haji Asgar Ali, Zinnat Ali, Kador Ali and Mohammad Alkes -- who masterminded and hired the five.
The four went into hiding after Bashir's brother, Chinu Mia, filed a case against them and some unknown people, he added.
Talking to The Daily Star at the DB office, the detainees said they were hired by the four.
“We were paid Tk 2 lakh and the rest was scheduled to be paid later,” said arrestee Raju.
