'Nationalise jobs, start rationing of food'
Village police working in different unions of Lalmonirhat district yesterday formed a human chain in the district town demanding nationalisation of their jobs as class four employees and introduction of food rationing system for them.
Around 458 village police of 45 unions in five upazilas marched to the deputy commissioner's office at noon, formed a human chain in front of the office and then submitted a memorandum to the DC.
ADC General Zakir Hossain received the memo from them on behalf of the DC Mokhlesar Rahman Sarker.
Mominul Islam, president of Lalmonirhat Village Police Karmochari Union, said village police collect tax and patrol their respective village at night to check robbery, mugging and other criminal activities. They also help law enforcers arrest the fugitive criminals.
“We have been demanding for long to nationalise our jobs and fix monthly wages according to national pay scale, but the government is yet to take any step to meet the demands,” he added
Maniruzzaman Manir, a leader of Village Police Karmochari Union Lalmonirhat union, said village police across the country lead a miserable life as each of them receives wages of only Tk 1900 a month.
“We urge the government to bring them under the pay scale of class four employees for their survival,” Manir said.
He demanded that the government introduce rationing system for village police.
Of the monthly wages, a village police gets Tk 850 from the government and rest of the amount from the union parishad (UP) office. They receive the government portion of the wages from upazila nirbahi officer's (UNO) office.
