32 win English in Schools contest
More than 200 students of Kaliganj Pilot Girl's High School in Kaliganj upazila took part in an English language fair under "English in Schools" programme jointly organised by The Daily Star and mobile operator Robi yesterday.
The programme began with the screening of globally renowned movie "The Lion King", followed by quiz tests on vocabulary, extempore speech, role play, MCQ and the like. Eighteen students won in the competitions under the judgement of a three-teacher panel.
Sufia Khatun, head mistress of the school, who inaugurated the fair at about 10:00am, appreciated the initiative, which was aimed at improving English language skills of students.
She urged The Daily Star and Robi to host such programmes every year to inspire young learners to enrich their knowledge in English.
Sufia Khatun and Fahima Parvin, an English teacher, distributed prizes among the winners at the end of the programme.
Meanwhile, 14 students at Ramu Girl's High School in Cox's Bazar won the English contest under the English in Schools programme yesterday, our Cox's Bazar correspondent reports.
Over 100 students of the school took part in the competitions.
At the award giving ceremony, Syed Karim, headmaster of the school, said, "The initiative of The Daily Star is enriching teachers at schools, which are underprivileged and located in remote areas. The programme should continue".
