Judicial probe demanded
Pro-BNP-Jamaat teachers of Chittagong University (CU) yesterday demanded judicial probe of the clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Islami Chhatra Shibir erupted on February 8 on the campus.
The clash left the university's two students, Masud bin Habib of English department and Mujahidul Islam of zoology department, dead.
They made the demand at a meeting held at the central library auditorium of the university.
The teachers alleged that the university authorities recruited teachers in various departments on political consideration in the last syndicate meeting on March 15, disregarding existing teachers' recruitment rules of the university.
They urged the authorities to stop such recruitment process immediately.
The teachers also alleged that the university authorities were trying to provide the residential halls to the student organisation loyal to the government.
Their other demands include ensuring accommodation of resident students in all student dorms of the university and immediate arrest of the killers of the two students.
Prof KM Golam Mohiuddin presided over the meeting while CU Teachers' Association (CUTA) President Prof Dr Mojaffar Ahmad Chowdhury, among others, also spoke.
Later, the teachers submitted a memorandum to CU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Md Anwarul Azim Arif.
The teachers also threatened to enforce tougher programmes unless their demands are met.
