2 suspects in Aminbazar 6 killings held
Police arrested two fugitive sand traders, who are believed to be the main suspects of the killing of six students in Aminbazar on the outskirts of Dhaka last July, from the capital's Mirpur area on Monday.
Arrested Abdul Malek, 35, filed a robbery case against the deceased and the lone survivor of the incident allegedly to conceal and mislead the truth while Abdul Hamid, 40, had allegedly played a key role in the brutality.
The two were placed in a two-day remand yesterday after they had been produced before a Dhaka court. Police had sought 10 days' remand.
Tipu Sultan of Tejgaon College, Towhidur Rahman Palash, Kamruzzaman Kanto and Ibrahim Khalil of Mirpur Bangla College, Shams Rahim Shamam of Maple Leaf International School and Sitaf Jabi Munif of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology were beaten to death on July 18 last year, on the night of Shab-e-Barat, when they went to Bardeshi village.
Their friend Al Amin, who was with them at that time, is the lone survivor of the incident.
The next day of the incident Malek filed the robbery case against the seven youths, including the six deceased, while Savar police filed a murder case against 500 to 600 unnamed people of Bardeshi village.
So far 10 people, including the fugitive sand traders, have been arrested in connection with the killing.
“The arrest of Malek and Hamid is a major development in the case as this would help unearth the truth,” said Investigation Officer Sirajul Haque, a senior assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
In the forwarding of the remand prayer, the CID investigator mentioned that during the investigation it was found that both the arrestees were present during the killing and they were directly involved in the murder.
After the incident, a one-member judicial probe body was formed and the probe body in its report on September 8 determined that the students were innocent and some officers of Savar police were also “involved in the killing”.
Following the report and its recommendations, eight policemen of Savar Police Station were suspended for their alleged involvement in the killing and negligence of duty.
