500 sued in two cases
Two separate cases were filed against about 500 people including chairman of Buraburi union parishad Md Kamruzzaman alias Kamu with Tentulia police station on Monday night and yesterday on charge of attacking policemen and employees of Kazi and Kazi Tea Estate at Rawshanpur under Tentulia upazila in Panchagarh.
Sub-Inspector of Tentulia police station Solaiman Ali filed the first case on Monday night against 3-4 hundred people including chairman Md Kamruzzaman alias Kamu on charge of assaulting policemen and creating obstacle to performing their duty. Of the accused, 48 people were identified.
Tea estate general manager (GM land) Abu Hafiz filed the second case with the same police station yesterday against 4-5 hundred people including chairman Kamruzzaman on charge of attacking, vandalising, looting estate properties and valuables worth Tk.1 crore and assaulting employees. Of the accused, 34 people were identified and the rest remain unidentified.
Meanwhile, deputy commissioner of Panchagarh Tofazzol Hossain Mian formed a 3-member probe body, headed by additional district magistrate Gulal Shing, on Monday afternoon.
The DC asked the committee to submit its report within three days.
At least 25 people including policemen were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Rawshanpur village on Monday over taking control of a disputed land.
A group of attackers also vandalised Kazi and Kazi Tea Estate's office and badly damaged its furniture and vehicles.
According to officer-in-charge (OC) of Tentulia police station, several hundred people, equipped with sticks, iron rods and locally made sharp weapons attacked the tea estate early Monday.
Led allegedly by chairman Kamruzzaman, they entered the estate area by cutting barbed wire fence and then damaged furniture, doors, windows of the office and looted valuables, he said.
