Students test skills at English language fair
A daylong English Language Fair was held in Chittagong, Tangail and Natore yesterday with the participation of eight schools.
The Daily Star and Robi jointly organised the fair to improve proficiency of secondary school students in English.
Our Chittagong correspondent reports: Over 400 aspiring students of City Government Girls' High School, Collegiate School, and Agrabad Girls' High School of Chittagong city took part in the fair held in the city school premises.
The city school's Head Teacher Sucharita Das inaugurated the programme as the chief guest.
“Students have a fear of learning and speaking in English but the fair would help break the ice,” said Sucharita, urging all to lay importance in learning English alongside their mother tongue.
The fair began with the screening of a movie, The Lion King. Afterwards, quizzes and competitions on vocabulary, moral lessons, extempore speech and role playing and writing picture descriptions were held based on the movie.
Students also entertained the audience by reciting poems, telling jokes and singing songs. Later, prizes were distributed among the winners and an English language club was also formed.
English language teachers Shahed Mahmud of Collegiate School and Shahed Parveen of the Agrabad school also spoke at the programme.
Our correspondent from Tangail adds: Around 100 students of Madhupur Pilot Girls' High School and Nailla High School at Madhupur upazila in Tangail took part in the fair held at the Madhupur school's auditorium.
The Madhupur school's Headmaster Bappy Siddique inaugurated the fair at 10:00am.
The movie was also screened here, based on which the students took part in the quizzes and competitions. Prizes were later distributed among the winners and an English language club was formed.
Assistant teachers of the Madhupur school -- Haradhan Chandra Karmokar, Nepal Chakroborty, Aruna Mitra Mazumder, Fatema Khatun and Doly Rout -- and of the Nailla school -- Habibur Rahman and Akber Hossain -- addressed the programme.
Our correspondent from Natore reports: Over 200 students of Natore Government Boys' High School, Digapatia PN High School and Banbelghoria SR High School in Natore town took part in the fair organised at the Natore school's premises.
The Natore school's English language teacher Ansar Ali inaugurated the fair.
The movie was screened here, based on which the students took part in the quizzes and competitions. Prizes were also distributed among the winners and an English language club was formed.
Under English in Schools programme, the fair in also being coordinated by the education ministry while Adcomm Ltd is the creative and event partner.
