New Saarc secretary general takes over
Ahmed Saleem, former president of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, took office as the new secretary general of the Saarc yesterday.
Saleem is the 11th secretary general of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) and succeeds Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed of Maldives.
Dhiyana, first woman secretary general of Saarc, assumed office on March 1, 2011, but quit on January 22 in the face of a conflict with former president Mohamed Nasheed.
Saarc provides each member state an opportunity to nominate a candidate of their choice as the chief of the regional body for a three-year term.
The new chief, Saleem, was appointed the president of Maldives' Human Rights Commission in 2006. He served in that capacity till August 2010.
