<i>Held with food, charged with subversion</i>
Police arrested a BNP activist with food items at Savar Bus Stand yesterday morning for "his involvement in subversive activities" centring on the opposition's grand rally today.
Mohammad Firoj, a former general secretary of Savar upazila unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, a pro-BNP student body, was loading up a car with a huge quantity of puffed rice, flattened rice and molasses at the time of his arrest around 8:30am, Mohammad Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Savar Police Station, told The Daily Star.
Police arrested him on suspicion of his possible involvement in subversive activities centring on the today's rally, the OC said.
However, the same policeman said he suspected that Firoj might have bought the food items to distribute them among participants of the rally.
A Dhaka court later sent Firoj to jail.
Savar police also arrested 13 BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists yesterday from Savar Bazar area for what they said was obstructing police from discharging their duties. They were also produced before a Dhaka court and sent to jail.
