A schoolgirl of Gomostapur upazila town is fighting for life at a private clinic in the capital as an alleged stalker threw her into a river last month.
The victim was identified as Sonia Sultana, 16, daughter of Mainul Islam of Mokrompur village.
She is an SSC examinee of Alinagar Girls' High School in Rohanpur municipal area.
Victim's mother Anwara Begum said Nurul Islam Sabuj, 18, son of Rabjul Ghosh of Brojonatpur village, had been stalking her girl for long.
On February 18, Sabuj threw Sonia into Punarbhaba River from Rohanpur Rail Bridge as she refused his proposal, added Anwara.
Locals rescued her and sent to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.
Later, Sonia was shifted to Markas Clinic at Mirpur in the capital as her condition deteriorated.
The incident occurred on her way to Rohanpur Examination Centre, said Anwara.
A case was filed with Gomostapur police station accusing Sabuj, his father and sister Saifun Nesa.
Sabuj went into hiding after the incident, the OC of the PS said.
On Tuesday, hundreds of people, including teachers and students, formed a human chain and held a rally in the area, demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the stalker.
Ziaur Rahman, lawmaker of Chapainawabganj-2, Sazzadul Hasan, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and headmaster Alauddin Ali, addressed the rally.
