Bid to abduct 2 schoolgirls

Two youths were caught allegedly while attempting to abduct two schoolgirls at Biswanath upazila in Sylhet yesterday.
The arrestees were Ranu Miah, 23, and Matiur Rahman, 25, both hailed from village Kadipur.
Police and school sources said three miscreants, riding in an auto-rickshaw, stopped some girl students of Jonokalyan High School at Alapur near the Basia riverbank around 10:00am.
They tried to abduct two of the girls at dagger-point, the sources said.
When the other girls cried for help, pedestrians rushed to the spot and chased the miscreants, catching two of them while another one fled with the auto-rickshaw, the sources added.
School sources said the two were known faces of the area. The duo was handed over to police.
Hearing the incident, agitating students of the school staged a demonstration and put up barricade on the nearby Jagannathpur-Biswanath road for an hour.
