Mushfiqur retained as skipper
Mushfiqur Rahim has been retained as captain of the national team for the forthcoming Asia Cup.
Mahmudullah Riyad will act as the wicketkeeper's deputy in an extension for the pair who were first appointed for last year's home series against West Indies (in October) and Pakistan in December.
However, Mushfiqur's appointment as the skipper comes 24 hours after the 14-member team for the four-nation tournament was announced. This was mainly due to the disciplinary hearing hovering over the cricketer's head after the Bangladesh Cricket Board were hell-bent on taking action against him after he criticised the overall organisation of the BPL following the semifinal fiasco last week.
There were strong rumours yesterday that the board may name Mashrafe Bin Mortaza or even Riyad as the captain but to avoid further controversy, especially after Tamim Iqbal's unceremonious exclusion, the board decided to go with the incumbent.
Under Mushfiqur's captaincy so far, Bangladesh have played four Tests (1 draw, 3 losses), six ODIs (1 win, 5 losses), and two T20Is (1 win, 1 loss).
The Tigers will begin training today, though the cloud over the selection is still not gone as chief selector Akram Khan is set to talk to the media for the first time after his Monday night outburst.
