Equal facilities a must to ensure dev of children
President Iajuddin Ahmed yesterday stressed the need for having a universal programme in place to ensure overall development of the children.
“We need to have a universal programme so that children both in the rural and urban areas can grow up enjoying equal facilities,” he said.
The president was addressing a programme of Bangladesh Council for Children Welfare marking its golden jubilee celebrations at Osmani Memorial auditorium in the morning.
Iajuddin described poverty and malnutrition as the main hindrance to development of children and said a large section of the people cannot come out of the vicious circle of malnutrition due to poverty.
He called upon the people to work together for poverty alleviation to build Bangladesh as a prosperous country.
Iajuddin said an ideal citizen is an invaluable asset of a country and termed children as the nation's future resources.
“We have to develop the sense of patriotism, fraternity, tolerance, helpfulness and respectfulness in the minds of children so they can be grown up as responsible citizens of the country,” Iajuddin said.
He said the government has been working relentlessly to implement the Child Rights Charter, as the country is one of the first signatories to it.
“The government has already taken all the necessary measures to eliminate child labour and involvement of children in risky hazardous jobs,” he told the function.
Iajuddin also laid emphasis on the role of the family along with the state and nation in the grooming process of a child as he said a child mainly learns the lessons of social values from his family.
He thanked members of the organisation for their cordial efforts to protect the rights of children and urged them to continue their great efforts for the ultimate welfare of the nation.
Women and Children Affairs Adviser Rasheda K Chowdhury and Best Aviation Ltd Chairman M Haider Uzzaman were present at the programme as the chief guest.
