25 hurt, 30 shops damaged as men of ex-UP leaders clash
Fierce clash between the supporters of a former UP chairman and a former UP member on Sunday night left at least 25 people, including two police officials, injured at Dhoail village in Mohammadpur upazila.
The clashing groups also damaged around 30 shops at the local market.
Sources said, supporters of former UP chairman Abul Kalam Fakir of Bororia village and supporters of former UP member Iqbal Akter Uzzal of Dhoail village locked in a scuffle on Sunday afternoon while watching a football match of Asaduzzaman Smriti Gold Cup Football Tournament at Dhoail High School playground.
In the evening , people of Bororia and Dhoail villages locked in a fierce clash leaving at least 25 people including Sub-Inspector (SI) Mujibur Rahman and assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Akter Hossain of Mohammadpur police station injured.
The feuding groups used lethal weapons during the clash that continued till 10:00pm.
Police and locals said, armed gangs swooped on the business establishments of their rivals at Dhoail bazaar and vandalised those. Ten shops were badly damaged in the attack.
At one stage, they set fire to another 20 shops at the bazaar.
On information, Mohammadpur police rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.
As the feuding groups also attacked the policemen, they fired 24 rubber bullets and picked up Likhon Mian, Ayub Hossain and Sohag from the spot.
