Ctg arts festival starts tomorrow
A two-day long Shonkho-Dyang, an arts festival of Chittagong, will kick off at DC Hill in the port city from tomorrow.
Its organisers, at a press conference here yesterday, announced the festival and its details.
Kamal Sengupta, one of the organisers, said people at the fest will get a scope to enjoy the folk culture of greater Chittagong and the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The fair would also showcase aspects from the lives and culture of different religious and ethnic groups in the city.
Chittagong is a unique place where followers of four main religions of the world - Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity - and also people of different tribal groups are living harmoniously and performing their religious and cultural activities side by side, he said.
Also, the dialect of people here, their music and style of eating are different than other parts of the country, he added.
“So we thought of projecting this diversity of culture in Chittagong through organising a fair,” said Kamal.
As for the event's name, Shonkho represents the only river in the country that originated, flows and ends, all in Bangladesh, while Dyang was the ancient capital of Bangladesh, he added.
Hundred-year old veteran revolutionist Binod Bihari Chowdhury is supposed to inaugurate the fair at 5:00pm tomorrow.
Local songs of Chittagong, Maijbhandari songs, local plays and cultural verities of Chakma, Tripura, Khumi and Mro would be projected at the festival.
Poet Abul Momen, convener of the fair, and AM Ziauddin Khan, among others, were present at the conference.
AK Khan Foundation is funding the fair.
