Local players crash out
All five local boys and three girls crashed out of the singles competition in the Grameenphone International Junior (U-16) Tennis Championship (Group-3) at the Zafar Imam Tennis Complex in Rajshahi yesterday.
A total of 21 seeded players moved to the quarterfinals in boys' and girls' singles.
In the boys' singles, Chinese Taipei's top seed I-Ta Chen defeated Russian Kovalev Egor 6-4, 6-2 after Egor had beaten local boy Ashanur Islam Robin 6-0, 6-0.
Mazharul Islam beat Indian Pritiv Sivasubraman 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, but the local player lost to England's Jordan McColloch 6-0, 6-2.
Indian Jugal Marfatia beat Tazmul Islam of Bangladesh 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, Taipei's Keng-Cheng Lin defeated local Ram Ranjan 6-3, 6-2 and Indian Mansingh Athare beat local Nahid Islam Romel 7-2, 6-2.
In girls' singles, Indian top seed Poojashree Vekatesh clinched a quarterfinal berth beating Uzbek Vera Tverdikova 6-1, 6-0 after Vera had beaten local girl Anjum Samin 6-0, 6-1. Taipei's 16th seed Yi-Bei Jang beat local Tomalika Khatun 6-0, 6-1 while 11th seed Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands beat local Sharmin Alam 6-0, 6-0.
Top ITF ranking Malaysian and 2nd-seed Noordin Jawairiah moved to the quarters beating England's Bayliss Sian 6-3, 6-3 in the girls' singles.
A total 44 matches were held yesterday.
