Tight security on Feb 21
Seven thousand security personnel will be deployed in and around the Central Shaheed Minar in the city for smooth observance of Amar Ekushey on February 21 commemorate the martyrdom of the heroes of language movement in 1952.
Bomb squads and dog squads will also work at the venue which will be brought under security cover by setting up security archways and close-circuit cameras at all entry points.
The decision was taken at a meeting yesterday on security during the observance of Amar Ekushey, also the UNESCO-declared International Mother Language Day, at the home ministry with
Adviser Maj Gen (retd) MA Matin in the chair.
DU Vice-chancellor Prof SMA Faiz, Education Secretary Momtazul Islam and official of law enforcement agencies were present at the meeting.
As per the meeting decision, people going to pay tributes to language martyrs will be searched with metal detectors at entry points leading to the Shaheed Minar.
Additional striking force drawn from different law enforcement agencies will be kept ready to meet any emergency security situation.
Firefighters and medical teams will also remain on standby.
Briefing newsmen after the meeting, Home Secretary Abdul Karim said 6300 members from police, 600 from Rab and 100 from Bangladesh Rifles will be deployed in and around the Central Shaheed Minar.
A two-tier security bulwark will be built to make the venue “foolproof”, he added.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police would be in touch with Dhaka University authorities who will coordinate the observance of immortal Ekushey.
Asked whether the ongoing protest at the DU worries the government while observing the Ekushey, the home secretary said the DU authorities would look into the campus situation.
