Dyeing factory fined
The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday realised Tk 24 lakh as fine from an industrial unit for polluting the Shitalakhya river by discharging untreated wastes into it.
Conducting a drive at the factory of Sam Re Dyeing (BD) Ltd at Palash in Ghorashal upazila of Narsingdi on December 31 last year, DoE found that their effluent treatment plant (ETP) was shutdown.
This dyeing factory has so far discharged 75,400 cubic metres of untreated liquid waste into the river, massively degraded the river ecology, DoE officials said.
Muhammed Munir Chowdhury, director (enforcement and monitoring) of DoE, fined and realised the money after Sam Re Dyeing's Managing Director Rakib ul Kabir appeared at DoE office in the city yesterday.
