2 crushed under train
Two youths were crushed under a train yesterday morning at Salla in Kalihati upazila of Tangail, an area where seven more people died under trains in last four months.
One of the deceased was identified as Mithu Sheikh, 32, of Sariakandi upazila in Bogra and worker of a ship-breaking yard in Chittagong. Identity of the other, aged about 35, could not be known immediately.
The victims along with other passengers of a Bogra-bound bus got off the vehicle after it was stationed on Bangabandhu Bridge approach road at Salla area around 6:30am, said witnesses and police.
The victims were perched on the side of the rail track, when a Dhaka-bound train knocked them down, they said.
Younus Ali Miah, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station, said such accidents have been occurring in the area because the Joydevpur-Bangabandhu Bridge rail line is constructed very close to the busy Bangabandhu Bridge approach road especially at Salla.
“People are usually remain unaware of oncoming trains, especially at night, because of noise from the busy highway,” the OC said.
On December 25 last year, two vegetable vendors while talking over mobile phones were crushed under a train at the same place.
Two bus staff members died at the same area on October 17 while on August 15, three people including a cameraman of Somoy Television were crushed to death in the same manner.
