Bangladesh miss quota spot
Bangladesh's hope of securing a quota place for the London Olympics in the men's 10m Air Rifle was shattered when shooter Asif Hossain Khan and Abdullah Hel Baki put up disastrous performance on the opening day of the 12th Asian Shooting Championship in Doha, Qatar yesterday.
Asif, the 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, hit a new low by managing to make 586 out of 600 to finish in 25th position while his teammate Baki managed 582 to become 33rd.
Gold went to Indian star shooter Abhinav Bindra, who put Zhu Qinan of China in the shade to score 701.1 points. Qinan had to be content with the silver medal with a score of 700.8 while Tao won the bronze medal with a combined total of 699.7.
However, Ruslan Ismailov of Kyrgyzstan and Bayara Nyantai of Mongolia won the Olympic quota places
despite finishing in the sixth and seventh position respectively as the top finishers of the 10m Air Rifle had already earned their quota places through different tournaments.
Ismailov qualified for the shoot-off having scored 594 in the qualification and then struck 120.5 to score a combined total of 696.5 to earn the London Olympic quota spot.
Bayara scored a total of 695.8 593 in qualification and 102.8 in the shoot-off to finish seventh and earned the quota place.
