Students protest decision to cancel registration
Students of the port city's Gorib-e-Newaz High School, who were allowed to appear in the upcoming SSC examination under special consideration, yesterday protested the school authority's decision to cancel their registration.
The students protested on the school premises at Halisahar, saying that the school authority took the decision without informing them while they were preparing themselves for the SSC examination.
Sources said, of the 417 candidates, 115 passed in all subjects in the test examination at the school and finished registration for SSC examination.
Later, the school authority allowed 225 students, who failed in one subject in the tests, to register under special consideration while the rest 77 students, who failed in more than one subject, were not allowed, sources said.
However, on Tuesday, the school authority cancelled registration of the students under special consideration, sources added.
Protesting this, the students questioned as to why the school authority gave them scope for registration under special consideration if they had to cancel it.
Admitting to the incident, the school's acting Headmaster Jesmin Akhter said the board took the decision and the school authority was compelled to follow it.
Some 68 students, who failed in more than one subject in the test examination, along with two members of the school governing body, compelled the school authority to allow them for registration on November 20 last year, she said.
When the education board authority of Chittagong came to learn of this, they formed a probe body on the matter, she said.
Based on the probe report, the board decided to allow only students who passed in all subjects in the test examination as well as the referred candidates from previous year to sit for the upcoming SSC examination, she added.
When contacted, the probe body chief Jamal Uddin, also assistant controller of Education Board of Chittagong, could not be reached over the phone on the matter.
