Another cold spell next week
Homeless and poor people are likely to suffer again by bitter cold as the meteorological department forecast two more cold waves over northern and central parts of the country.
“Out of the two cold waves, the first one that is expected to hit after January 12 would be severer,” said a duty forecasting officer.
He said the other cold wave could sweep over the country at the end of the month but it would be moderate.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department warned in their latest long-range forecast that northern and central parts of the country would experience severe to moderate cold spells when the temperature could go as low as four degrees Celsius.
The Met office yesterday forecasted cloudy grey sky with occasional drizzling in some places of Comilla, Noakhali, Rajshahi, Khulna and Dhaka might continue today while the day and night temperatures would remain unchanged.
Dense fogs will envelope different parts of the country especially Rangpur area while medium fogs will prevail in other areas particularly the river ports and char areas, the Met office said.
Already a few dozen lives, mostly elderly and children, were claimed in the first cold wave of the season that swept over in mid-December last year.
Hospitals of northern districts were overwhelmed with cold weather related patients and the lowest temperature was six degrees Celsius recorded in Jessore.
The duty forecasting officer said cold snaps are caused by chilly winds of Siberia blowing from the north-western direction.
Two cold waves in a single month are not uncommon, especially in January, as this month is the coldest month of the year, he said.
