No self-respecting country can accept caretaker system
Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman yesterday said no self-respecting country can accept a caretaker government system.
"We've destroyed the Supreme Court by introducing the caretaker government system. It is not acceptable,” said Rahman, who himself was the chief adviser of a caretaker administration.
“Perhaps there will be no incident of boycotting elections in our country, even if the caretaker system is gone."
He was talking to reporters after an award-giving ceremony and reception organised by Ethics Club Bangladesh at Dhaka University Senate Bhaban.
Justice Rahman suggested looking for a new formula to hold free and fair elections. "There are so many persons who are wiser and more talented than I. They sure will find a new method."
Replying to a question, he said the main purpose of a government is to maintain law and order, which deteriorated in 2011.
Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman, Professor Emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury, economist Prof Anu Muhammad, among others, were honoured at the programme.
Parliament in June 2011 abolished the non-party caretaker system allowing general elections under an elected partisan government, sparking off protests from the opposition.
