Tight security for New Year's eve
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is going to beef up security from this evening on New Year's Eve till tomorrow to prevent unwanted situations and facilitate festivities.
Additional forces will be deployed and seven mobile courts with alcohol detectors and speed guns will be posted at major points of the city, DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed told a press briefing yesterday.
Anyone arrested with drugs or alcohol will be tried instantly by mobile courts, he said, adding that roadside bars have to be closed by 6:00pm.
He said at least 14 special teams with five wreckers would be on duty to seize speeding vehicles.
Benazir requested outsiders to avoid diplomatic zones of Gulshan, Baridhara and Banani after 11:00pm and urged students and teachers of Dhaka University to carry their identity cards on the campus.
He asked the city dwellers to avoid disruptive activities like exploding crackers, driving recklessly and gathering on roads.
According to a press release of DMP, commuters are requested to use Phoenix, Amtoli, Kakoli, DOHS-Baridhara-United Hospital and Natun Bazar road crossings to enter Shahbagh, Banani and Baridhara areas.
To enter DU campus Old High Court, DMCH and Nilkhet road crossings should be used. All other crossings will be kept closed from 7:00pm (today) to 5:00am, it said.
