18 Myanmar nationals arrested in St Martin's

Law enforcers on Friday night arrested 23 people including 18 Myanmar nationals from Dakkhinpara Badambania area of the St Martin's Island when they were trying to go to Malaysia illegally.
The other arrestees are from Chakoria of Cox's Bazar and Patiya of Chittagong.
Members of the Coast Guard raided the area and arrested them following a tip-off that some people were trying to go to Malaysia crossing the Bay of Bengal on a trawler.
Manpower broker Kamal of Chakoria assembled the group with an assurance that he would send them to Malaysia at a cost of TK 50,000 to 70,000 per person, said the law enforcers quoting the arrestees.
They were arrested just before their scheduled boarding on a canoe, which would have taken them to a trawler anchored in the sea, added the security men.
MM Masud Sikdar, a sub-lieutenant at St Martin's Station of the Coast Guard, has confirmed the arrests.
