Legal notice served on govt
A Supreme Court lawyer yesterday served a legal notice asking the government to stay within 72 hours the proceedings for splitting Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) into two parts.
Aklas Uddin Bhuiyan sent the notice around 4:30pm yesterday to the LGRD minister, secretary to the LGRD ministry and deputy commissioner of Dhaka, saying that if they did not stay proceeding of splitting DCC within 72 hours, he would file a writ petition with the High Court challenging it.
Advocate Aklas Uddin told The Daily Star that Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh as per the constitution of the republic, and there is no provision in the constitution for splitting DCC into parts.
The decision of splitting DCC is against the provisions of the constitution, he added.
Following a cabinet nod on October 31, a bill was placed in parliament on November 23 seeking necessary amendments to the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009 for implementing the government decision to split DCC into two parts.
