<i>Suspicious arrest on 'suspicion'</i>
On suspicion of “planning to carry out subversive activities” during the BNP chief's visit to Bagerhat, police arrested yesterday the district ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, an ally of BNP.
Two Jamaat activists were also arrested along with ameer Moulana Moshiur Rahman Khan.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia offered fateha at Khan Jahan Ali's shrine in Bagerhat yesterday afternoon. She was in Bagerhat on her third day of the road march to Khulna. She was supposed to address a meeting there but refrained from doing so on account of being sick.
Police raided the home of Moshiur at Dashani in the wee hours of yesterday and arrested him along with Ahsanul Kabir and Emdadul Sheikh, said Moazzem Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bagerhat Model Police Station.
The trio was arrested on suspicion of trying to carry out subversive activities during Khaleda's visit, said Abu Zihad, inspector of Bagerhat Model Police Station.
Local BNP, however, condemned the arrest of the Jamaat ameer without any specific charges and demanded his immediate release.
Early yesterday, police also raided the houses of Jamaat nayeb-e-ameer of district unit Moulana Rezaul Karim and Bagerhat municipality ameer Iqbal Hossain at Badekarapara but did not arrest anyone.
