Homage to Imdad Hossain

A memorial meeting on the recently deceased Language Movement veteran and artist Imdad Hossain was organised by Sammilito Sanskritik Jote on November 26 at the Central Shaheed Minar premises.
Veteran artists Qayyum Chowdhury, Rafiqun Nabi, Liakat Ali Lucky, director general of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy; Mofidul Haque, writer, publisher and a trustee of Liberation War Museum; theatre personalities Ataur Rahman and Mamunur Rashid, Nuh Alam Lenin, press and publication secretary of Awami League; social activists Mizanur Rahman, Sani Chowdhury, Morshed Ali, among others, addressed the gathering.
Golam Kuddus, vice president of Sammilito Sanskritik Jote, presided over the meeting.
Qayyum Chowdhury said, “Hossain was an introverted patriot. He was my batch mate at Dacca Art College. At one stage, we worked together at BSCIC. During that time, he came to the office from Rohitpur, Keraniganj. He was very sincere in his duties.”
Mamunur Rashid said, “Hossain was the first set designer in our country. He designed many eye-catching sets for what was, before 1971, Pakistan Television. He never compromised on quality in his career.”
About Hossain, Nuh Alam Lenin said, “During the Liberation War, he helped the freedom fighters through all their struggles, pain and agony.”
Rafiqun Nabi said, “Hossain was not only a graphic artist, but also a socially and politically aware person. He taught us to live with honour and dignity as artists.”
“Hossain took a strong position against social inequity and oppression. He wanted to establish the rights of the downtrodden people in our society,” asserted Liakat Ali Lucky.
Golam Kuddus said, “He was involved in the progressive movement since his teenage years. He will be remembered for his vast contribution to the Language Movement.”
Ataur Rahman noted Imdad Hossain's immense contributions to his own life as an artiste.
Hossain was born in 1926 at Rohitpur, under Keraniganj district. He formed the Agrani Shilpa Shongo with many other renowned personalities in 1952. Later, that year, he organised the East Pakistan Shangskritik Shammelan. During the Language Movement, Hossain took active part in the processions. He received the Ekushey Padak and other prestigious awards for his outstanding contribution to the Language Movement.
