Govt to root out piracy soon: Sahara

Home Minister Sahara Khatun yesterday said the government will soon rid the world's largest mangrove forest- the Sundarbans- of pirates.
“Law enforcers have largely brought the piracy under control in the Sundarbans and it will soon be rooted out,” Sahara said after visiting the headquarters of West Zone of Coast Guard at Mongla there.
Sahara Khatun, however, said if the pirates seek clemency from the government to return to their normal life, it will consider the matter.
“The sea ports of the county were unsafe during the of BNP-Jamaat alliance government, but now the ports are safe due to stringent measures undertaken by the government in this regard,” the minister said.
Referring to many drives of the Coast Guard to maintain law and order in the costal areas, she said the government is determined to turn it into an efficient force by providing it with ships, helicopters and other necessary equipment.
Sahara Khatun said the government has approved to set up three stations and one outpost for the West Zone of the force keeping in mind the security of the costal belt. She also said the government has undertaken a project to establish a training academy for the Coast Guard.
Among others, Director General of Coast Guard Rear Admiral M Sarwar Hossain and its West Zone Commander M Saidur Rahman were present on the occasion.
