Ban Ki-moon's visit

It has elevated our spirit

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has left Bangladesh after wrapping up his three-day visit the centrepiece of which was inaugural of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) here.
It was a welcome occasion and the people of Dhaka were especially appreciative of his being nostalgic about this city in connection with his earlier stint as Republic of Korea(ROK)'s ambassador to India and Bangladesh. In particular, his appreciation of Bangladesh's successes in different social sectors including disaster management, too, has been cheery to the country's self-image.
The UN secretary General's joining the CVF meeting in Dhaka brought the event under global spotlight. And Bangladesh's taking over as the chair of the climate forum has also provided us with the opportunity of not only leading it, but also projecting our situation as the most climate vulnerable nation before the international community into a sharper focus.
During his brief visit, the UN chief had also the occasion to meet our political leaders whereby he stressed the importance of dialogues among political parties in resolving their differences. In the same breath, however, he noted that since it was an issue internal and unique to Bangladesh's polity, the onus rests on our politicians to find our own ways to resolve those. It is worthwhile to mention that the leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia during her meeting with the UN chief had been critical of the incumbent government about its performance and its dealing with the opposition.
As we have said before, we would again do it and urge the opposition to join the Jatiya Sangsad (JS), that is, the national parliament and let the entire nation know what is ailing us and pinpoint where the government has failed to deliver. The constituents have elected the opposition lawmakers to JS exactly for this purpose. Boycott of parliament continues to be a disservice to them.
It is time politicians in Bangladesh came of age and engaged each other fruitfully to resolve any burning issues at the Jatiya Sangsad which is the House of the People. Khaleda Zia could at least join the parliament to help remove some of the clouds of uncertainty hovering the political situation.
