ACC sues envoy to Vietnam

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday filed two cases against Bangladesh Ambassador to Vietnam and Laos Supradip Chakma for misappropriating over Tk 19.43 lakh.
The first information report (FIR) says the ambassador siphoned off the money for personal benefit while serving as minister at the Bangladesh Embassy in Turkey.
ACC Assistant Secretary Mahbubul Alam filed the cases with Ramna Police Station. Former administrative officer of the embassy in Turkey Mashiur Rahman was accused of abetting Supradip in one of the cases.
One case was filed on the charge that Supradip realised Tk 2.19 lakh showing fake voucher on his return home from Turkey.
In the voucher, he said the money had been spent to bring his personal car from Turkey. Supradip, however, had not brought any car from Turkey.
The other case was filed against Supradip and Mashiur for siphoning off Tk 17.24 lakh from the embassy, according to the FIR.
Of the amount, over Tk 12 lakh was taken from the secret account, over Tk 3.18 lakh from the welfare fund of the embassy and over Tk 2 lakh in cash.
Suprodip joined as minister in the embassy in September, 2004 and performed duty until November, 2007. He was transferred and appointed as director general of the foreign ministry in 2007. In October 2009, he was appointed as Bangladesh ambassador in Vietnam and has also been performing duty as Bangladesh ambassador in Laos from Vietnam.
