Still some way to go: Manmohan
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday said there was still some distance to be covered before the Teesta water sharing agreement with Bangladesh could be signed.
He said his government has had discussion with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee whose strong reservations had scuttled the signing of Teesta agreement during his visit to Dhaka in September.
"It is too early. We have held preliminary discussion (with Mamata). There is still some distance to be covered," Manmohan told Indian journalists while returning from the Maldives after attending the Saarc Summit.
He was responding to a question about the agreement.
Manmohan, who met his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina on the sidelines of the summit, said they had a brief discussion on the Teesta issue.
"I mentioned to the prime minister (Hasina) that we will work to build a national consensus so that an agreement can become a realistic proposition," he said.
They also discussed the roadmap for implementation of the land agreement on boundaries signed in September, added Manmohan. "As you know, we have reached an agreement but it requires constitutional amendment. We will work to that end."
Regarding supply of electricity to Bangladesh from India, he told Hasina, “We will certainly be helpful within the limits of our capabilities.”
