UP chairman, his men allegedly assault woman councillor
A woman councillor of Badarganj municipality was beaten up allegedly by a union parishad chairman and his men during the election to a school managing committee on Monday.
Ward coucillor Ferdous Begum was seeking vote for her husband Zahurul Haque, one of the candidates in the election to the managing committee of Baderganj Collegiate High School.
As Kalupara Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Shahidul Haque Manik tried to prevent Ferdousi from campaigning for her husband, she locked in an altercation with the chairman, witnesses said.
At one stage, chairman Shahidul and his men beat up Ferdousi, leaving her seriously injured, they added. She is now undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College and Hospital.
Ferdousi said, chairman Shahidul and his men swooped on her while she was requesting the voters to vote for her husband on the school premises.
Shahidul denied the allegation of beating up the ward councillor.
“She insulted me while I was seeking vote for myself,” he alleged.
Officer in charge of Badarganj police station Tobarak Ali said, “This was not a serious matter. I came to know that the UP chairman and the councillor had an altercation over seeking vote.”
However, Zahurul Haque filed a case in this regard yesterday.
