Voters spoke eloquently for the best
Congratulations to Selina Hayat Ivy on her magnificent victory. The highly charged Narayanganj City Corporation polls, stalked by intense rivalry between candidates and controversy over political party backing ended with the nation heaving a sigh of relief. As the stakes went high for all concerned and all kinds of foreboding rent the air, the dramatic note of success it has concluded on fills the nation with a sense of collective triumph.
It has been a victory at various levels. First, in spite of intimidation, fear of money and muscle play, scare-mongering and apprehension of troubles voters have had their last word. Narayanganj people have come out victorious by helping to conduct the process to fruition. Undeterred by negative rhetoric and distraction, the voters came out of their homes in record numbers, took it upon themselves to spontaneously participate in the polls that they owned up as something truly theirs.
It is the victory of the best candidate -- Selina Hayat Ivy, the tested leader with a good track record, so much so that she was unstoppable despite Awami League's express support for Shamim Osman.
Media's scrutinising role in following the election atmospherics, raising issues of concern, putting the voters in touch with candidates and keeping them posted with objective reporting and empowering them created an ambience for voter enthusiasm and their obligations in making informed choice.
The effective maintenance of law and order during the crucial phases of the polls and the impervious spread of security net do credit to the administration.
The Election Commission from the very beginning showed serious commitment, kept tab on the proceedings at all stages, intervened where necessary and synchronised details including EVM operation with great finesse. Despite being ignored at a crucial phase by the government it again goes to their credit that they promptly arranged replenishment of forces as required.
Salute to the people of Narayanganj who defied all kinds of provocation and threats of muscle power and money use to exercise their franchise in an exemplary fashion. That where there is voters' will, there is always the way out of the mire on to the path of sunshine and glory is proven.
