WTO, FBCCI review trade policies
A two-member delegation of the World Trade Organisation met with the leaders of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry and representatives of other trade associations to review trade policies, FBCCI said in a statement yesterday.
“The objective of the meeting was to exchange views with the private sector and pursue greater transparency in trade-related measures,” said Mario Kakabadse, WTO councillor who led a delegation.
Kakabadse said there are various issues, including tax and non-tax incentive, domestic trade support being provided to businesses, and especially exports, that need to be discussed.
M Jashim Uddin, acting FBCCI president, said: “For the fourth Trade Policy Review, WTO has sought basic information on over 100 topics relating to trade, investment, customs procedures, preferential schemes, balance of payments situation, subsidies, and the state of food security and performance of the manufacturing sector.”
“This trade-related information was sent to the WTO headquarters by September,” he added.
This is the fourth meeting of this kind with the last taking place in September 2006.
The finalised policy review meeting will take place in September 2012.
