Four killed in road accidents
Four people, including a schoolgirl, were killed in separate road accidents in Chittagong, Naogaon and Bogra yesterday.
Staff correspondent from Chittagong reports: Locals vandalised a bus after it killed a schoolgirl on the Siraj-ud-Doula Road in the port city yesterday morning.
The deceased is Rupa Chowdhury, 16, a class X student of Chittagong City Corporation Kushumkumari High School.
Police said a bus coming from Anderkilla hit Rupa around 9:45am when she was going to the school to appear SSC test examination.
Rupa was declared dead when she was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
After hitting the girl, the bus dashed an electric pole and broke down on the road.
Angry mob dragged the driver out of the bus and beat him.
Police arrested driver Md Shafiullah, 28, and admitted him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital under police custody.
Rupa's father Ujjal Chowdhury, owner of a pharmacy in Hajari Gali, and a resident of Rahamatganj area of Dewan Bazar, filed a case with Kotwali Police Station in this connection.
Shimu Akhtar, an eyewitness who used to go with Rupa to school everyday, said a bus coming from Anderkilla hit Rupa from behind as the girl was approaching towards her (Shimu) and another classmate Subonti on the other side of the road.
Our Bogra and Chapainawabganj correspondents add: A driver and a helper were killed as a truck plunged into a roadside ditch in Manda upazila of Naogaon yesterday morning.
The deceased were truck driver Abdur Rashid, 42, and helper Saiful Islam, 32.
Police said the truck hit a roadside tree and fell into the ditch while giving side to another truck around 6:00am.
The truck was going to Naogaon from Mongla Port of Khulna.
Meanwhile, one passer by Altaf Hossain, 65, was run over by a bus on the Bogra-Dhaka highway at Noimile in Bogra yesterday afternoon.
In protest locals put road barricades there for an hour.
