Cocktail explosion in a school
The explosion of a 'homemade' bomb inside a classroom at a school in Mirpur has created a stir. It caused severe injuries to three twelve-year old pupils on Saturday afternoon getting the parents' hackles up. It marks a new dimension to the lethal risks young children appear to be facing outside their homes. This is not to say that they are safe at home either, but only to emphasise that even in exclusive places children can no longer feel safe.
When the bomb was found in a drawer of a classroom desk it couldn't have been a prank played out by a mischief-monger. We should assume that it was planted deliberately to create terror and bring harm to children. A conjecture has been made that perhaps the maker or the purveyor, out of fright, might have desperately hid it in a covered place.
All of this naturally calls for a thorough investigation to get to the bottom of the incident. This is the job of the police which it is hoped will come up with answers to the apparent mystery. In fact, they must ferret out the culprit while raising the level of vigil in and around academic compounds.
At the same time, the school authorities do have a set of concerns to address. They must be on guard against outsiders sneaking on to the premises. At one point, awareness messages were put across to the public warning them about any wrapped up innocuous looking objects found either in the transports, building corners or even a park. This alert should be repeated to include the schools as they may have become targets of terrorization. Who knows? We can't take chances.
We urge the authorities to take the injured students under their wings and provide them with all necessary medical help for their early and all round recovery.
