Five among cops injured in clash
Five people, including four policemen, were injured in a clash between police and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men at Thakurgaon Intersection yesterday evening.
Police fired around 40 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the BCL activists who blocked the main road after vandalising the local Awami League office to protest a move to arrest one of its former leaders over extortion charges. Some four passenger buses were also vandalised at that time.
The clash ensued around 8:00pm when police went to the spot and tried to remove the blockade. At one stage, police fired rubber bullets when the BCL men threw brickbats at them.
Till filing of this report around 12:00am, police held six youths from different areas.
The injured--constables Malek, Goljar, and Motaleb of Thakurgaon Police Station and the former BCL leader, Montu,--were admitted to Sadar Hospital while OC Gopal Chakraborti was given aid at a local clinic.
The extortion case was filed by Kazi Farms against five activists of Jubo League and BCL with the police on October 15.
Witnesses said activists of a section of the BCL vandalised the AL office around 7:30pm when police were in a drive to arrest its former district unit organising secretary Mohammad Mamun.
