War Trial Remark

MPs for trial of Khaleda

Senior lawmakers of ruling Awami League yesterday demanded trial of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for her attempt to “save” those accused of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
They also urged the Speaker to fix a day for adopting a censure motion against Khaleda, also the opposition leader in parliament, for her recent remarks against the war crimes trial.
The Speaker advised them to give a notice to the parliament secretariat in this regard.
At her recent rallies in Borga and Chapainawabganj, the BNP chief claimed that Jamaat leaders Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, Delwar Hossain Sayedee and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury were not affiliated with anti-liberation forces; rather those who have signed deals against national interest are anti-liberation.
“She [Khaleda] should be severely criticised for her remarks. This parliament should adopt a censure motion against her,” said Awami League front-bench lawmaker Tofail Ahmed.
Taking a point of order, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal MP Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal initiated the unscheduled debate just after the question-answer session.
Senior treasury bench members Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Suranjit Sengupta, among others also joined in the criticism.
Tofail Ahmed said Khaleda Zia basically wants to protect the anti-liberation elements like Nizami, Mujaheed and Sayedee and push the country towards chaos and civil war.
Referring to Khaleda's threat to wage another war, Suranjit asked Khaleda who she wants to fight against taking war criminals and fundamentalists on her side.
JSD lawmaker Badal demanded a general discussion on what happened in Chittagong between March 1 and March 16, 1971 and why Khaleda refused Zia's letter asking her to come out from the cantonment.
