Among Nasir Hossain, Elias Sunny, Shuvogoto Hom Chowdhury and Sohrawardi Shuvo, at least two are set to make their Test debuts today.
With five members of the previous Test already out, it would also be an opportunity for Naeem Islam, Shahadat Hossain and probably Rokibul Hasan, who could be drafted in if skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and coach Stuart Law decide to keep a two-man spin attack.
Since Shuvogoto has been added to the 14-man squad as an extra batsman, Sunny placed ahead of Shuvo by Law and Nasir's current form could win him a place, the likelihood of Nasir and Sunny coming to the fore as the 60th and 61st player are quite high.
Nasir, the BKSP prodigy who came good in Dhaka's Premier League at an early age, has shown early composure in international cricket. After scoring a fifty in his ODI debut in Zimbabwe, the acid test was to perform in front of the home crowd. Though batting at a lowly position, the Dinajpur-born all-rounder's unruffled 50 in the second ODI marked him out as one for the long haul. Sunny too has done it all in domestic cricket with bat and ball. He has been among the top wicket-takers in Dhaka's Premier League for the last few seasons. While some would think the NCL one-day final was his best performance with the bat, the man has three first-class centuries.
For those who make debut today, it won't only be taking the step up but also to find the path towards a sustained international career. With someone like Shakib Al Hasan as a teammate, there isn't a better person to learn from. The man regarded as one of the best spinners in the world is now free of any extra burden and is well placed for better days.
