Reporters offered money for coverage!
Reporters were offered money -- in the name of 'conveyance' -- to cover an event on food security for ultra poor, organised by The Daily Jugantor and NGO Brac yesterday.
The incident took place after the end of a roundtable at CIRDAP in the city.
This correspondent of The Daily Star was also offered money by a person, who introduced himself as a Brac official. The reporter refused the offer and left the place.
The person said it was a conveyance allowance to which the programme participants including the guest speakers were entitled.
Brac in some programmes entertains participants with money, but not every time, the person said. For the discussion, reporters were offered Tk 1,000 each.
Asked, Zia Hashan, media manager of Brac, said the top management expressed surprise to know this. He also said they would take action if such an incident had actually happened.
Brac offers 'conveyance' to the guest speakers in some programmes, when the list is prepared in consultation with the co-organiser, he added.
“We, in principle, do not offer money for news coverage," Hashan claimed.
