Outbreak of kala-azar in Pabna

The outbreak of kala-azar is taking an epidemic form as a good number of people have been attacked by the deadly disease in Chatmohor upazila of the district.
Lack of awareness and indifference of the authorities concerned are blamed for the outbreak of the disease.
A total of 25 people were affected from January to August this year while non-government estimate put the figure at more than 50. Women and children are the worst victims.
Local sources said virus of the disease spread from one person to another through the biting of one kind of fly, locally known as 'Bele Machhi'.
Those facing malnutrition and anemia are mostly affected.
