Magura BNP's rival faction yesterday held a meeting and took out a procession in the town to press home its demand for dissolution of the district committee led by Kabir Murad and Ali Ahmed Biswas.
The aggrieved BNP men also burnt the effigies of district unit President Kabir Murad, General Secretary Ali Ahmed Biswas and central BNP leader and former minister advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury, also from Magura.
They held the meeting at Nomani Maidan in the district town with advocate Mokaddes Hossain in the chair. Former general secretary of BNP district unit Mohammad Nazimuddin, former senior vice-president of the same unit Aminul Islam Chandu Mian, leaders of the rival faction Farukuzzaman, advocate Sakhawat Hossain, Khan Hasan Imam Suja, advocate Shaheed Hasan, Faruk Ahmed Babul, Akhter Hossain, and district Jubo Dal leaders Alamgir Hossain and Ashrafuzzaman Shamim addressed the rally, among others.
The speakers said Kabir Murad has no organisational capability to run the party in the district. He has been carrying out the party activities at upazila and union levels through 'pocket' committees comprising 'inefficient' and 'worthless' people, they alleged.
Branding Ali Ahmed Biswas a listed criminal, the rival BNP men said he was a regional leader of outlawed Sarbahara Party and awarded ten years rigorous imprisonment (RI) by the Special Trial Tribunal-7 in Dhaka during army-backed caretaker government for possessing illegal arms. Biswas is now on bail granted by the High Court.
During 'Operation Clean Heart' in 2002, army arrested Ali Ahmed Biwas as a 'listed criminal' and recovered a shutter gun from his possession, they said.
The speakers accused BNP's central leader Nitai Roy Chowdhury for harbouring a 'listed criminal' like Ali Ahmed Biswas. Nitai helped Biswas get the post of general secretary of the district unit, they said.
They urged the central committee to immediately dissolve the Murad-Biswas committee and form a new one with the dedicated party men.
After the rally, the rival BNP men brought out a procession from the venue and paraded the main streets of the town. During the procession, they burnt the effigies of the three leaders.
Internal feud in BNP Magura district unit surfaced after formation of a committee with Kabir Murad and Ali Ahmed Biswas as president and general secretary in July 2009. Since then, aggrieved leaders and activists led by advocate Mokaddes Hossain and Iqbal Akhter Khan have been agitating demanding dissolution of the committee.
The two factions held separate councils of the district unit on November 5, 2009 and formed two committees. But the central BNP finally approved Kabir Murad and Ali Ahmed Biswas-led committee.
