Deals against country's interest won't be accepted
BNP yesterday said the opposition and the people would not accept any deal, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and protocol with India if those go against the country's interests.
BNP demanded that all the deals, MoUs and protocols that will be signed with India be made public so that the countrymen can know what those actually are.
BNP MP and member of the parliamentary standing committee on foreign ministry Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan said this at a press conference held at parliament's media centre.
In light with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's arrival here yesterday, Barrister Mahbub said, “BNP welcomes the visit and the unsettled sensitive issues between India and Bangladesh need to be resolved during the visit.”
He said they have so far been able to know through newspapers and electronic media that three deals, seven MoUs and one protocol will be signed with India, but the countrymen are fully in the dark about the content of those deals.
He said the Indian government shared content of the deals with their opposition and state governments but unfortunately our government is hiding facts. “This is undemocratic and dubious.
“We came to know that a framework agreement on the basis of 25-year Indira-Mujib Deal will be signed but the deal was unequal,” he said.
Barrister Mahbub alleged that the government kept the countrymen, even the opposition MPs, in the dark about the deals and protocols to be signed with India.
“Even the parliamentary standing committee on foreign ministry does not know whether these deals are in favour of the country or not. Why is the government maintaining so much secrecy?” he said.
He also criticised the government for negotiating about the deals with India with an unelected adviser, Dr Gowher Rizvi, though all the Indians involved in this process are democratically elected people.
He alleged that the government decided to give corridors to India in the name of providing transit and port facilities.
People do not know whether the government took any effective steps towards minimising the US $ 400 crore trade deficit with India.
