Barapukuria strike on
Production at Barapukuria coal mine remained suspended for the second consecutive day as the indefinite strike launched by the miners and staff continued yesterday.
The miners and staff of the Barapukuria Coal Mine Company Ltd (BCMCL) have been demanding regularisation of their jobs along with other facilities.
Yesterday they were seen sitting idle in front of the residential gate of the coalmine since morning to realise their demands.
At least three meetings took place between agitating miners, labour contract company XMC and BCMCL yesterday but they failed to resolve the deadlock.
Rabiul Islam, president Barapukuria Coal Mine Miners and Workers Union told this correspondent that they continued their indefinite strike as all the negotiation meetings ended in failure.
Sources said, the BCMCL employs nearly 1,200 people on contract basis including around 1,000 miners.
The miners, mostly from XMC, started work abstention from 6:00am Tuesday, suspending coal production.
Citing mining as a risky and life-threatening occupation, Rabiul said they wanted security of the miners through regularisation.
"We know that job regularisation of all the miners is not possible overnight, but the process can be started by regularising a few of them right now,” he said.
On Sunday, the leaders of miners' and workers' union announced the latest programme at a press conference at Dinajpur Press Club
