Tribunal rebukes prosecutors for delay
International Crimes Tribunal yesterday rebuked the prosecutors for not timely providing the defence lawyers with necessary papers and documents over charges against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee in connection with crimes against humanity.
During the hearing on charge framing against Sayedee, the tribunal also cautioned the prosecution. “We are here to serve a noble job and want your cooperation,” said the tribunal Chairman Justice Nizamul Huq.
The three-judge panel headed by Justice Nizamul adjourned the hearing till September 4 after Tajul Islam, one of the defence lawyers, filed a petition seeking time.
Tajul said they were not prepared for the hearing as they received only a portion of the documents (statement of the witnesses) on Tuesday though the court order was to provide it on July 19.
“They (prosecution) violated the court order,” claimed Tajul.
The tribunal asked Tajul only to take note of the prosecution's arguments and said the defence counsels can place arguments on September 4.
Later, Chief Prosecutor Ghulam Arieff Tipoo told reporters that they are not neglecting their duties and trying their best to cooperate with the tribunal.
